Ulster Rugby

rugby the sport

Ulster Rugby, one of the four professional province rugby clubs in Ireland, is home to the Ulster Rugby team. It is part of IRFU Ulster Branch. They compete in the Heineken Champions Cup as well as the United Rugby Championship. It plays its home games in Belfast at Kingspan Stadium.

Ulster has had its fair shares of success. The province is currently second at the Irish conference. However, the club has entered a period of decline over the last few years. This does not mean that there will not be improvement this season. Nevertheless, the province is expected to struggle for the Champions Cup next season.

Ulster had a golden decade in the 2000s. In 2005, they won the Celtic League title. In 1999, Ulster became the first Irish provincial to win Heineken Champions Cup. Their first European competition was won by Ulster, who finished at the top of Pro12 in 2012. In 2011, the club finished runners-up in the Heineken Champions Cup, beating Toulouse and Saracens on the way.

In 2006-07, the club's fortunes plummeted. After a defeat of Gloucester 32-14, Mark McCall was forced to resign as head coach. Meanwhile, the club's director of rugby, David Humphreys, retired. David Humphreys resigned from the province and took up a similar post at Gloucester.

The management structure of the team underwent major changes in 2009-10. Mark McCall, a former Ulster captain was appointed to replace Alan Solomons. Assistant coach, Jeremy Davidson has been appointed. Les Kiss was appointed as the new director of rugby. Dan Tuohy was hired from Exeter.

The team underwent a dramatic turnaround during the 2010-11 seasons. Neil Doak became the new head coach of the team, replacing Alan Solomons. Ulster won 13 out of 14 of their first 14 games and qualified for the quarterfinals of Heineken Cup. Unfortunately, they lost to Leinster in Twickenham.

Despite poor results, the Ulster team showed their support for the cause. They were led in part by Justin Harrison from Australia and Isaac Boss, a New Zealand-born Irish scrum half. Both of these players were named the Player of Year. Roger Wilson and John Cooney also received the honor. But, the club experienced a setback when Nevin Spencer, centre, died in an automobile accident. Other players also left the club, including out-half Ian Humphreys who went to London Irish and Rob Herring, a back row forward.

The 2008-09 season was a disappointment. However, things started to change. They won five of their next five games, including a victory over Scarlets with 27-16, despite losing to La Rochelle the first day. They advanced to the semifinals of the Celtic League.
